The Tiny Habit That Makes Kids Kinder (and Families Closer)

How one simple poster taught my kids that kindness isn’t something we talk about. It’s something we create.

Kindness poster with tear-off tags

A few months ago, my kids and I colored and hung a simple black-and-white poster at our local grocery store. It read:

“Kindness can change everything. Tear off a tag. Give it away.”

The tags below it said things like I believe in you, You are loved, and Thank you for helping me.

The next week, when we came back, every tag was gone.

My 8-year-old's grin could have powered the produce section. “Mom! We helped people we don’t even know!”

And that’s when it clicked for me: kindness isn’t something we lecture about. It’s something kids get to create.

Let kids be the giver, not just the helper

As caring adults, you and I spend a lot of time reminding our kids to be nice. Say thank you! Share! Hold the door!

But sometimes the real magic happens when we hand them the steering wheel.

That grocery-store poster (yep, the one you can grab below!) lets your kids be the givers. They color it, choose where to hang it, and then wait to see what happens.

Each missing tag? A tiny act of hope they set in motion.

It’s small—but it’s powerful.

Because the moment kids see their own kindness out in the world, something clicks. They start looking for more ways to give it away.

Suddenly kindness isn’t a rule. It’s a ripple they started!
Try this:
Let your child choose where to hang the poster: at school, the library, church, the park . . . Then check back next week and see what happened.
